Fluoride: How it Works

Posted .

Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in the Earth’s crust. It strengthens and nourishes your tooth enamel and gives you a stronger and healthier smile. But do you ever wonder why? Well, our dentist, Dr. Carly Locsey, is happy to tell you why by explaining how fluoride works.

When you expose your teeth to fluoride (by brushing with fluoride toothpaste, rinsing with fluoride mouthwash, drinking fluoridated water, and receiving a professional fluoride treatment), then the fluoride dives into the tooth enamel, which is the white shell that protects the inner layers of the teeth. As it dives, it nourishes the shell, making it tougher and tougher as time goes on. When your enamel is tough and strong, bacteria, decay, and acid attack it but have a difficult time damaging it. This helps you prevent cavities and enamel erosion. So, it’s best to expose your teeth to fluoride regularly so you can maintain a top-notch smile and oral health.
